About Our Preschool Blog

The Shaler North Hills Library preschool blog is designed specifically for Preschoolers, generally ages 3-6! Our page includes our weekly Preschool Express Storytime books read and songs sang, as well as new and fun preschool books, great websites for preschoolers and more to come! So often, children, parents and caregivers want to remember either stories we've read or songs/rhymes we've sung, so we thought it would be cool to have one source where everything is located! We hope you enjoy this site!

Hope to see you soon!

Miss Dolores :)

Preschool Storytime - Letter o

Today's "o is for owl" craft
The stomach bug caught up with me, so I wasn't at work last Friday for Letter n week, but glad to be back for a great Letter o week! We read a story about a snake and had fun with opposites and read a fun story about what it would be like if we had eight arms like an octopus! Here is a recap of what we read, sang and created today! Feel free to have your child bring an item to each week's program...search your house with your child for items that begin with the letter "p" for next week's program!

Books we read today:

"Opposnakes: A Lift-the-Flap Book About Opposites," by Salina Yoon
"My Octopus Arms," by Keith Baker

Songs we sang today:

The Opposite Song by Dr. Jean (we used shaker eggs with this song)

We can do opposites, opposites, opposites.
We can do opposites follow me.
Top and bottom...(act out motions)
Front and back...
Happy and sad...
Left and right...
Up and down...
Loud and soft...
Open and shut...
Stand and sit...
and put them in your lap!

We also played a fun opposites matching game, which I found on this site: http://www.playdoughtoplato.com/2013/02/13/the-opposite-game/ Each child was given a card, then they took turns putting them on the flannel board and whoever had the opposite card would come up to make a match!

Then do what I do and say what I say!
Ready? (ready!)
(repeat each phrase)
Scoop, scoop, in goes the flour
Crack, crack, in go the eggs
Sprinkle, in goes the sugar
And a splash of milk, and a pinch of salt
Oh no! We forgot the berries!
Have to go pick them so let's get dressed!
Zip, zip, zip up your jacket
Pull, pull, pull on your books
Run, run, out to the bush
And pick, pick, pick, pick.
Scoot, scoot, back to the house
Zip off your jacket
Slip off your boots
Plop, plop in go the berries
Stir it up, stir it up, stir it up
Drop, drop, drop in the batter
Put it in the oven
Tick, tock, set the timer
And wait, and wait
Ding, ding, ready!
Blow, blow, cool 'em off
Yum, yum eat 'em up!
Ah...muffins!

Songs we sang today:

 "The Goldfish Song" (Laurie Berkner)

Lots of little fish were sleeping on a rock
In the bottom of the ocean
They lifted up their heads
And they shook out their tails
And they said let's go swimming

Let's go swimming lets go swimming
Yeah let's go swimming
Let's go swimming let's go swimming In the bottom of the ocean
Then the little fish got so very, very tired
That they came back to the rock
And they put own their heads
And they put down their tails
And they took a little nap

And when they woke up
They decided to take a shower

So whey washed their hair
And they washed their ears
And they washed their tummies
And they washed their beards
And they washed their nose
And they washed their toes
And then they said

"Wait a minute, we're fish!
We don't take showers!"

Let's go swimming let's go swimming…
Then the little fish got so very, very tired…

And when woke up
They decided to brush their teeth

So they got out their tooth brush
And their toothpaste
And they squeezed a little on
They tried not to waste
And they put it in their mouth
They brushed north and south
Ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch
And then they said,

"Wait a minute, we're fish!
We don't brush our teeth!:

Let's go swimming lets go swimming…
Then the little fish got so very, very tired…

And when they woke up
They decided to ride their bicycles

So they rode to the left
And they rode to the right
And they rode all day
And they rode all night
They rode down the hill
And then faster still
And then they said,

"Wait a minute, we're fish!
We don't ride bicycles!"

Let's go swimming…
Let's go swimming…

"Looking For Dracula"

Looking for Dracula, but I'm not afraid
I've got binoculars, I've got my cape and my fangs.
Oh, Oh! What do I see?
A spooky swamp!
Can't jump over it
Can't go under it
Can't go around it
We have to put on the big rubber boots and go in it.

Looking for Dracula, but I'm not afraid
I've got binoculars, I've got my cape and my fangs.
Oh, Oh! What do I see?
A huge lake!
Can't jump over it
Can't go under it
Can't go around it
Okay, into the boat, we have to row
Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream
Ha, Ha, fooled you, I'm a Submarine!

Looking for Dracula, but I'm not afraid
I've got binoculars, I've got my cape and my fangs.
Oh, Oh! What do I see?
A haunted house!
Can't jump over it
Can't dig under it
Can't go around it
Alright, we're going in. Open the door …
Here come all the bats. Watch out!
Let's sneak in.

Looking for Dracula, but I'm not afraid
I've got binoculars, I've got my cape and my fangs.
Oh, Oh! What do I feel?
A great big foot, with a great big body!
With a great big head, a great big fangs!
Get out of there! Quick!
*The Great Escape! Have fun with actions,

"Do The Dragon" (Laurie Berkner)

Once upon a time there was a dragon (a dragon)
He lived by himself in a cave called The Dragon Zone
He liked to dance 'til he made his tail shake
And breathe fire just to bake a cake
But he wished that he didn't have to do it all alone
He would show everybody how he moved his old dragon bones

Well there was one young girl named Calico
She brought all her friends to The Dragon Zone
They said "Why mighty dragon, are you all alone?"
We would learn to do what the dragons do
Come on let's go!

So he looked at them and he said
Can you do the Dragon?
And they looked right back
We can do the Dragon
Can you do the Dragon?
We can do the Dragon
Well if you want to do the Dragon
1-2-3-4 Ha! Here we go!

(chorus #1)
I've got a tail that swings
I flap my dragon's wings
I've got spiky scales and long sharp nails
There's a fire in my mouth
and a big red tongue
So you'd better watch out 'cause here I come!

Can you do the Dragon? (chorus)
That was good said the Dragon, let's do some more

(chorus #2)
You take one step up and you give 'em a look
You take one step back it's in The Dragon Book
And then you jump-2-3 and then you bend down on your knees
And you float away on a Dragon Breeze

We can do the Dragon
(repeat chorus #1 and chorus #2)
